TtW, EEA, ETS, GHG, SEEMP, CII, CO2eq. It’s a new language for a new era, one where we collectively lower emissions.
The Propeller Club Geneva, chose the magnificent ‘La Mère Royaume’ as the setting for this Lloyd’s Register event on decarbonisation. A cosy location steeped in history where we looked at what the future holds for shipping.
Thank you to Richard Watts for organising this event, to Luke Shu and Alberto Pérez Espinosa of Lloyd’s Register, and to Martin Viquesnel of Louis Dreyfus for their insightful presentations – and a warm welcome to Geneva to Luke.
One of the main topics discussed was where responsibility lies for attending lower emissions levels among the many parties involved in moving goods across the globe (traders, charterers, crew, etc.).
It was also pointed out that the crew themselves play a huge part in lowing emissions, as they will operate the systems on the vessels that reduce carbon emissions. This state-of-the-art technology requires a new skill set and training to drive the required results and so planning to ensure this is in place and achieves the desired results.
This was not our first time attending an event on decarbonisation, and it will certainly not be the last, given the complexity of lowering emissions across fleets of vessels all over the world. Throughout all the discussions we have been party to, the thing that stands out is our need to align companies, countries and international law – if COVID has taught us anything it is that a piecemeal approach is ineffective.
