Lamu, Kenya | STS Operations at Inner Anchorage

10 September, 1016 – MasOceans has been following developments at Lamu Inner Anchorage, an emerging location for Ship-to-Ship (STS) operations in East Africa.

Deep, sheltered waters, relatively low marine traffic and its position along major shipping routes are putting Lamu increasingly on the radar for STS operations.

Why Lamu for STS?

• Deep, sheltered waters — a naturally protected bay with deep-water access channels supporting safe and efficient STS operations year-round.
• Strategic location — along major shipping routes linking the Middle East, East Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Far East, with minimal vessel deviation.
• Low congestion, greater flexibility — significantly less marine traffic than established regional hubs means better scheduling, shorter waiting times and faster turnarounds.
• Marine support in place — pilotage, towage and mooring support are already available.
• ISPS Code compliant — providing a secure environment for vessels, cargo and crew.
• Large tanker capability — deep-water access and wide navigable channels support larger vessel classes and a broad range of petroleum transfer operations.

Looking ahead

Lamu is also part of the LAPSSET Corridor development, with oil terminal and logistics infrastructure planned.

There is early, unconfirmed industry discussion around Lamu potentially being considered for a major East African refinery project. This remains unconfirmed, but it is one to watch as the area develops.
