Suez Canal | The Numbers Are Moving Up

21 September, 2026 – After a long period of major services diverting around the Cape of Good Hope, more are now gradually returning to the Suez route.

The latest figures from the Suez Canal Authority show growth in both vessel numbers and net tonnage.

August 2026 | 1,358 vessels

In August 2026, 1,358 vessels transited the Canal, up 27% year-on-year, while net tonnage reached 68.3 million tonnes, an increase of 51.1%.

Both measures are moving upwards, with net tonnage showing the stronger year-on-year rise.

Containerships are part of the picture too

Between January and August 2026, net tonnage from containerships reached 72.1 million tonnes, up 54.2% compared with the same period last year.

The shift remains gradual

Despite these figures, the shift is still gradual.

More services are returning to Suez, while routing decisions continue to be closely tied to security conditions.
