15 July 2026 – Recent weeks have brought several developments across China’s shipping sector, from port rankings and shipbuilding to weather conditions affecting port operations.

Market Developments
  • The latest Xinhua-Baltic Shipping Center Index ranks Shanghai as the world’s second international shipping centre, overtaking London and reaching its highest position since 2014.
  • China also saw the departure of MV Oriental Wisdom, currently the world’s largest methanol dual-fuel container vessel (24,168 TEU), on her maiden voyage from Qingdao to Northern Europe.
  • At Posidonia 2026, Hengli Heavy Industry secured 21 firm newbuilding orders, valued at approximately RMB 15 billion, increasing its confirmed orderbook to more than 330 vessels through 2030.
Weather Outlook

Two typhoons affected northern and southern China during the past week, causing congestion across a number of coastal ports while recovery operations continue.

Forecasts for 25–28 July indicate:

  • 20–40 mm of rainfall across several regions.
  • Local accumulations exceeding 60 mm.
  • More than 100 mm in parts of Southwest China and southern Shaanxi.

Further rainfall is expected across Northwest, North, Northeast, Huanghai and Southwest China, and temporary operational delays remain possible while ports continue clearing recent congestion.
